i bet it was. thats why i started doing stand up. if i can get the same reaction from a film as i can (most of the time) with a live audience it would make it so much more special. showing in a pub is a great idea, if they think your films shit then so what, you will learn from it, if they think it's great you will feel fantastic and have a fucking great night. theres a good line in gladiator when oliver reed is talking to russel crow about working the crowd, the mob is fickle. very very true. by the way the nerves you would feel before showing in that pub and the satisfaction, joy and adreneline you got from it is something you will never get from "art".

Going back to the original question...

    Why Horror?

First off I think making horror movies is fun, playing around with SFx, as well as developing a story, directing actors, and everything else that goes with hard-working film-making!

Second... horror is a good solid genre-safe method of breaking certain markets... ie. "Straight-to-video"... ala http://www.screenedge.com/

Once you get some recognition, you get more cash, more cash you get better movie-making resources you get...

This isn't an excuse for people to make piss-poor movies, (as some people do), but it allows the movie-maker to explore a genre?!

    all sounds like bollox, right?

well you go round to your mate's house on a saturday night, with a crate of beers... what movie do you want to see?

"Citizen Kane", or "Zombie Mutants Attack 7", or Jet Li's latest Kung Fu effort...

So basically your saying horror films are lowest common denominator then?

    Stephen-
Glad you enjoyed this. Your probably right with your "I can't be scared" idea. As a kid my imagination was waaaay outta control-I got nightmares from fricken Ghostbusters 2! (Guys alive in paintings, is still a scarier idea to me than all the zombies put together-saw it Roald Dahl's "witches" as well.)

So maybe it's some kinda mechanism I developed. My opinion of movies is different-I dislike more than I like...I try to be critical so I can make better movies...
I challenge you to pick one good point from Judge Dread...hahahaha...

Also everyone is saying Horror is easy to start with, but if you are a skilled writer there are far easier genres to pull off convincingly on a low budget!
